Merna's academic journey began at Fairleigh Dickinson University, where she majored in biology and minored in chemistry. During her time there, she had the opportunity to publish her research in collaboration with the Waksman Institute at Rutgers University, focusing on duckweed (Landoltia punctata) cDNA and mRNA sequencing.
After graduating from Fairleigh Dickinson University, Merna relocated to Philadelphia to further her education by completing a post-baccalaureate dental program at Temple University. This additional training provided her with a solid foundation in dental-specific coursework and helped her prepare for the rigors of dental school.
During her gap year, Merna's dedication to serving others led her to join a UK-based charity aimed at providing dental aid in high-need areas around the world.
