Leesha loves adventure, whether it's a spontaneous international trip, going for a hike, or a day trip to NYC, often with her husband and sometimes with her dog, Paxi.
Leesha’s journey to becoming a PA began during her undergraduate studies at Calvin College, where she initially planned to pursue a nursing degree. However, after realizing her true calling, she changed course and sought a Spanish major and biochemistry minor while obtaining the prerequisites needed to apply to PA programs.
During this time, Leesha recognized that the path to becoming a PA was more complex than other careers. Throughout her education and career, she has developed a passion for global health, spending a rotation in Bolivia during her PA program and now caring for underserved and uninsured patients at Yale New Haven Hospital, a federally qualified health center.
Leesha's second passion lies in hematology and oncology, where she has built up her experience caring for patients at Yale New Haven Smilow Cancer Hospital. As part of the inpatient team, she has provided compassionate care to patients admitted for cancer progression, treatment, and complications, as well as end-of-life care.
During her final year as a student in the Duke PA program, Leesha served on the admissions committee for one application cycle. Hana uses techniques like correlating noise or rhythm to help students remember specific terminology. By using tailored strategies, she helps make challenging material more accessible and engaging for students.
Undergrad: University of Colorado Denver
Dental School: University of Colorado Anschutz School of Dental Medicine
When Hana is not studying or tutoring, you can find her hitting the slopes at Copper Mountain, her favorite place to snowboard.
Always passionate about dentistry, Hana began shadowing professionals and learning about the field during high school. She was among the five students accepted into the CU Denver BA/BS DDS Pipeline program. She has been tutoring since she became the president of the pre-dental club at the University of Colorado.
Hana's approach to tutoring is rooted in her own experiences preparing for the exam. She aims to provide students with the support and guidance she found invaluable. Her main goal is not just to help students pass the test but to equip them with confidence and a deep understanding of the content.
Key advice Hana gives to students when they are preparing for the DAT is to create correction notes to help them identify patterns in the mistakes they make and to enhance their understanding of the concepts. The process of creating correction notes involves writing down the question, followed by the answer, the thought process behind why the student selected the wrong answer, and an explanation of the correct answer. The reason why she emphasizes correction notes is because the DAT is a standardized exam, and all standardized exams follow patterns. By having students create correction notes, they can discern patterns in their mistakes and in the way the exam presents questions.
