The University of California–Davis offers two majors in nutrition. The Clinical Nutrition program teaches students about the sciences of nutrition and food service management, education, and sociology.

Case Western Reserve University offers many programs in nutrition:

  • Bachelor of Science in Human Nutrition: This program prepares students for further training/graduate studies in nutrition, dietetics, public health, medicine, and nursing.
  • Bachelor of Art in Human Nutrition: This program differs from the BS in Nutrition because it doesn't require Principles of Chemistry Laboratory or Statistics. Other than that, both programs are very similar.
  • Bachelor of Science in Nutritional Biochemistry and Metabolism: This program focuses on nutrients and metabolic functions. You can also combine this program with majors like Biology, Chemistry, Psychology, or Sociology.
  • Master of Science in Nutrition: This program can be completed in one to two years. An undergraduate degree in nutrition isn't necessary to apply.
  • Ph.D. in Nutrition: Students work with a research advisor and mentor with an NIH-funded research program. Students gain knowledge of molecular biology, biochemistry, and metabolism.

You might not care about prestige, and that’s okay. The good news is that any program on this list can be the right one for you if you clearly define your goals.

2. Evaluate the Hands-On Learning Opportunities

As an up-and-coming nutritionist, hands-on experience is paramount. When deciding on your school, look for a program that values in-person learning opportunities; textbooks can only teach so much!

For example, look into how much they emphasize clinical rotations in hospitals or healthcare facilities. Working in these settings allows you to see firsthand how practicing nutritionists deal with their patients. This will be extremely valuable for your education and career.

3. Consider Specializations and Curriculum Flexibility
